The Water Is Wide

The Water Is Wide is a piece that explores distances and crossings. Created as part of 34 Bristols, The Water Is Wide responds to the 4910km between Bristol in the UK and Bristol in Maine, USA.

20 drummers - spread out over a kilometre along the Bristol harbourside - pass a beat between them, until the sound has travelled the full distance. The passing of this beat happens at the speed of sound and takes 4 hours and 28 seconds to cover the space.

The Water Is Wide is a collaboration with Jo Hellier and was commissioned by MAYK.
